What We Know About PFAS Exposure and Long-Term Use

PFAS chemicals have been widely used in consumer products for decades, including cookware, food packaging, textiles, and firefighting foams. Because of their durability, these substances are sometimes referred to as “forever chemicals.”

Research into PFAS exposure is still ongoing. Scientists are studying how long-term exposure may affect the human body, particularly when exposure occurs at low levels over many years.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency notes that PFAS exposure is being evaluated for potential health effects, especially with repeated or prolonged contact. These studies focus on how PFAS accumulate in the environment and in the body, as well as how they move through air, water, and food systems.

It’s important to note that research does not always lead to immediate conclusions. Instead, findings are evaluated over time as new data becomes available. This is why regulators continue to update guidelines and recommendations as science evolves.

For consumers, this growing body of research has led many to reconsider everyday products that rely on chemical coatings, especially when alternatives made from single, uncoated materials are available.
